Bonjour Belgium

Updated: Sep 19, 2020

After travelling in Europe for 17 days, I've finally planted my feet on Belgian soil. I solo travelled to Brussels for a 3-day orientation. Now if you know me well, you'll know that time and direction are not a strong suit. This is why I showed up to Gare du Nord like 2.5 hours early. But even when I got there to get settled, I couldn't sit still. I was so nervous that the train would be scheduled to leave earlier and I wouldn't hear, leaving me all alone in the train station with an invalid ticket.

Whilst waiting to see what gate my train would be arriving in, I was approached by who didn't quite say anything but I knew he was silently asking for anything. In a panicked fashion, I gave him the last few Haribo gummies in my backpack pocket. He asked if I happened to have a drink, which I sadly didn't. He was very gracious, and as he walked away he gave me one of the most genuine smiles and a quick wink (almost as if we had a good inside joke). Throughout the day, this has stuck with me because I realized that even when you feel alone there will usually be someone to help you out. That the world is never trying to be against us, it just feels that way sometimes. And although it was a small act that he may forget about or already did, he helped make my day and also my perception of circumstances.

Luckily after, I made it on the train without incident. 1 smooth train ride later and I was in Brussels. I felt very intimidated when I arrived, lots of people, lots of languages and lacking in a sense of direction. There are lots of different nationalities taking part in the orientation, mostly Mexicans, a few Italians, 2 Aussies and the sole Canadian being me. It's a struggling day, not going to lie. But I know you can only grow when you venture out, so I will try to let it take its course.

All the love,

E

p.s. look at that chip flavour, family! I think I'm in good hands but only if it's dill.
